It’s hard to know where your future lies sometimes, especially if you’re still in school or just starting out in the working world. Everyone wants more money, and the tough question is how to get it when you don’t know what you want to do in the future. Here are ten ways to earn money in 2022 that will help you build up your savings account, start putting some money away for retirement, and show you that there are plenty of ways to generate wealth outside of your day job. None of these are particularly difficult either!
Create an online course
A course is one of my favorite ways to make extra money. You can create a course on just about anything—from an introduction to music or other topics, all the way through an advanced degree like finance. And you’ll find that your students will often be quite passionate (and loyal) if you teach them something they care about (such as photography or making art). As long as you have a good idea for how you want your course structured, it’s easy enough to build out online courses with websites like Udemy or Teachable. My course on how I built Millionaire Marketing has been such a success that I’m now teaching at Northwestern University and creating courses on entrepreneurship and blogging!
Become a part-time virtual assistant
There are more than 150 million Americans with jobs and a whopping 17.7 million Americans looking for work. And while it’s great that so many people want a job, that could mean employers have their pick of candidates—and lots of potential options when it comes time to make an offer. One way to stand out is by becoming a virtual assistant or VA for an organization (or even for yourself). It can be one of your first steps toward finding paid work on your own terms, as well as giving you experience working remotely if you’re moving toward self-employment down the road.
Find freelance jobs on Upwork
One great way to make money online is through freelancing. Upwork is a great place to find jobs where you can set your own hours and there are plenty of jobs available for beginners looking for extra cash. Right now, there are more than 4 million jobs on Upwork so it’s a good place to look if you want some side gigs. While most of these jobs will not pay big bucks, they’re usually easy and require little experience or skills making them an ideal option for students looking for additional income or just some extra spending cash.
Create a smartphone app
The app market is huge and getting bigger. If you can think of a niche where an app could improve a person’s life, then it’s probably a good idea to explore that possibility. See if you can come up with an original idea for an app, and make sure it will solve a real problem or bring value to people’s lives. Consider looking for information about other apps on a site like Flippa or Dribbble—where other people share links about their app ideas—to get some ideas of what works and what doesn’t work when creating apps, as well as how much they sell for. Your goal should be to create something unique so you stand out from others who are trying to do something similar.
Start selling on eBay, Etsy, and Amazon
Websites like eBay, Etsy, and Amazon allow you to start selling on their platform and make a bit of side income. Although it may not seem like much (especially when you’re starting out), every little bit helps. If you sell one item every day of your life on these sites (which is quite possible if you just pick one thing to sell) by 2020 you will have made over $250,000! You don’t even need to do any marketing or promotion at all; these sites will do that for you. You just need an internet connection and a small fee ($20 – $100 per month). Start selling today!
Earn from referrals on Cashback sites like Ebates or ShopAtHome
Because you’re not technically selling anything, it’s easier to get cashback on items with high-rewards sites like CashbackHolic. Sites like these pay you a percentage of your eligible purchases, while Ebates and ShopAtHome reward you for simply clicking through from their site. All you have to do is remember where your purchases come from and make sure that they count for all of your vendors on CashbackHolic. For example, if one of your gift cards pays cashback, don’t double up by buying it on Ebates too! Those cents can really add up over time and become a significant stream of income for little effort.
Take paid surveys on Survey Junkie
Taking surveys online is a great way to make extra cash and gain some valuable insight. The website Survey Junkie lets you take these paid surveys, earning anywhere from $0.50 to $50 per survey. The points you rack up can be redeemed for gift cards, Paypal payments, sweepstakes entries, and other rewards. To qualify for any survey—paid or otherwise—you have to fill out a profile; it’s totally worth your time if you’re looking for a few extra dollars.
Try your hand at YouTube Channel monetization
Despite a recent crackdown by Google on video content that is too promotional, some video bloggers have managed to make impressive amounts of money. In fact, most YouTube channels rely heavily on a single source of income: YouTube channel monetization. This simply means running ads before your videos, or placing them at strategic points within your videos (e.g., after an engaging joke). If you’re concerned about quality, consider joining up with an established network like Channel Awesome or JTV. You can also sign up as an affiliate for other popular brands like StyleHaul, which has partner deals with retailers like Macy’s and Nordstrom, and give yourself a commission when others shop through your link.
Drive for Uber, Lyft, or Postmates
Some people are leery of driving for a rideshare service like Uber and Lyft because they think their earnings will be small. However, I’ve found that it pays more than you might expect. It’s also fun to meet new people, get tips and learn about other places around town. In fact, there are some cities where it pays even better than others. Many companies now offer guaranteed minimum pay as well so you can make sure you earn at least some cash on each trip even if it ends up not being as long as expected.
Turn passion into profit with blogging
Start a business-focused and/or career-specific online publication. According to current estimates, blogs generate more than $1 billion a year, which means there is plenty of room for monetization (with a healthy dose of SEO). This is more manageable than you might think. If you’re just getting started, try out WordPress with a built-in ad platform like Google AdSense or Mediavine. From there, consider adding affiliate links from companies like Skimlinks and driving traffic from social platforms like Twitter and LinkedIn. I talk more about monetizing blogs here.
